Welcome to LTED 506: Reading and the Elementary School Curriculum

Hi, I am looking forward to working with you this summer. We have just 10 short weeks to complete a semester's worth of material!  I am up for the challenge, are you?  We will be working individually and in small groups throughout the semester. It is CRITICAL that you keep up with all of the messages, updates, and assignments. Meeting online can be a challenge for some; the first step in overcoming the challenge is staying on top of everything (might I dare say that even trying to work in advance of some deadlines will be advantageous to you?) We will do a lot of reflection right here through the use of blogs. You will each create your own (more info on that is on our Blackboard site).

This first blog you will create (week 1) will be about you. Since we do not ever meet face-to-face, we will use this space to introduce ourselves. Here are some guiding questions to get you started:

  • Who are you? (good start, right?)
  • Describe your role in school (or other job you have)
  • NJCU program and intentions you have with your degree and/or long term professional goals
  • Your expectations from this course (hmmm, will I meet up to your standards? :-))
  • Family life
  • Hobbies
  • Interesting facts about yourself
  • Include some pictures and images
  • Creativity is welcome!!

Here goes...

My name is Michelle Rosen. I work in the Literacy Education Department at NJCU. I will be starting my 3rd year this Fall. I received my Undergraduate Degree from Rider University, majoring in Elementary Education/American Studies. I received my Master's Degree, Reading Specialist Certification, and Doctorate in Education from Rutgers University. I have experience teaching elementary school (first graders are fun!) before I began working at Rutgers in 1998. I worked there teaching college courses and running a professional development center until I joined the faculty here in 2013. My true (research) passion is professional development (literacy-related) where teachers understand the important of professional learning. The critical piece of being is a teacher is understanding that, even thought are you standing "in front of the classroom," you NEVER FORGET that you are always a student too! Keep learning and fine tuning your craft! I doubt you want to go to a doctor who hasn't learned anything new in 10 years, right? Why would we want teachers like that?

Saturday Night Selfie

Above is just a "Saturday night Selfie" It is my husband and me.  This summer, I will be married 19 years... don't all teachers get married in the summer? LOL:) My husband is a financial planner, we cannot be more different professionally!

A LONG time ago but a favorite:)

Here are my kids. This picture is an oldie but a goodie! Now they are 16 (and driving, ugh!) and 13. Ironically, they both hate to read (of course since their mom is a Literacy Professor and Reading Specialist) but nonetheless, good kids. I think I will keep them.

Above is where you can find me on most weekends. My daughter, Mollie, is a cheerleader. Her brother, Griffin, is a basketball player. Both of my kids have found the one sport they love and keeps them busy 12 months a year. I spend many a hours on a cold, hard, metal bleacher but I love it! I can't believe in just 4 short years, both of them will be in college :(

Storming the Field

This is a more recent picture of my son, with my brother and me. We stormed the field after a Rutgers football win. I love sports. I played soccer as a a kid. I enjoy watching most sports on tv and love to be at live sporting event (except golf and baseball). But, I will watch ANY final game of a series for the excitement. I love the electricity and pressure of the whole thing. My son is a huge Duke Basketball fan. For this 16th birthday, he went to Coach K's 1,000th win at the Garden. We could not have gotten him a better present! I think we share the same passion.

Here is me with my dad. I just happen to like the picture!
